The Riders ......

So introducing us all - me, I’m an almost 50 year old Cycling Instructor, mature student and British Observer/Hot Air Balloonatic cum PuT., but hell, life is for living so let's do it!  Also cycling will my son Richard who will be 17 on or around the Scottish/English border and possibly my daughter, Andi.  Then there is Milly who recycles bikes together with his partner, Yolanda who is a puppet master and is also driving support with Joanne Lord.  The wonderful thing about Milly [aka Graham] is that he knows his way around bikes so if anything go awry, problem solved!

I did the initial feasibility study in April so we have idea of weather and road conditions (and took some pics to whet your appetite to come join us, for part if not all of it) but the actual ride will be mid March – early April 2008 … for anyone who wants to contribute, become involved, offer help of any kind etc. then please go to our forum at http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/train1savemany and subscribe as that is where we put any updates, such as the outcome of the risk assessment, our rules for participating and any changes that might occur due to changing circumstances.

Who, what and why .....

As Truro branch’s Press Officer, I was to have been doing it for the RNLI’s “Train one, save many” campaign however Graham aka Milly-Peds will now be wearing that mantle as I will now be riding for Patch Adams  as circumstances have arisen which will prevent Karen from joining us ~ this is her website as she is considering the logistics of doing a ride from Marietta to G!I  although it is not yet set in concrete by any means, she is also a balloonatic so equally, it could involving an awful lot of hot air too www.e2e.UnlockingAtlanta.com  - whatever she does, Patch still needs a few more bricks for his clinic & medical school and she still wants to try and find a feasible way to contribute but on her side of the pond.  Richard will be doing it on behalf of Jo for the Antony Lord Foundation and 'Just Giving' sites will be set up for both ALF and the RNLI in due course.

The Gesundheit Institute does already exist to a degree, and the real Patch is exactly as Robin Williams portrayed him to be in the film , wanting to connect with people and has a wonderful dry sense of humour.  Golooksee for yourselves, just click on PATCH VIDEO WMV | QT”  In fact Karen, Richard and I all went there for the visitors weekend at the beginning of July and earned our 'fat pants' that Patch uses in the video and at the US Nationals this year we were asked to explain to the pilots what it was all about as the warm up act to a seminar., we had it all bar our red noses that I'd left back in the UK, tie dye t-shirts, fat pants and Karen is an excellent narrator which made emulating Patch so much easier ... and it generated laughter as well although I have to say, it's a darned sight easier teaching children!

We first came in contact with him when my eldest son dropped out of college and Patch invited him to go to Summer School at G!I.  That was the beginning of the a life changing encounter for him … aged 17 his first big adventure and he came home 5 weeks later with the word ‘meaningful’ in his vocabulary – that to me, says it all!  He is back there again this year as a volunteer too clowning and cooking and cooking and clowning, which again only serves to endorse it … but hey, it makes you think and certainly made him appreciate the simpler things in life too, which he wasn’t even sure if he could survive without but he surprised himself and now appreciates the values that I was bought up with!

It really is a very magical kind of place, with a waterfall for a shower and a real sense of tranquillity amidst the laughter, a little bit of heaven in what can be a very uncivilised world, a place where you can relax and feel safe but also are inspired to pitch in too, difficult to explain but somewhere you need to find out about for yourself.  If you would like to know more about the G!I as it stands today or volunteer your services in a practical way., please go to: http://www.patchadams.org

How you can become involved .....

What we hope you might do is to come and join us at some stage partially to promote cycling as a family affair and training for children and partially to become part of the team, especially if you can’t afford the time to do the entire ride for whatever reason, come and join us and be part of the bigger picture for as long as you can.

Where the children we’ve worked with are concerned, we hope that they will meet us in Sennen at a pre-arranged time and location (certainly there has been interest from quite a few in doing so) and then have them all cycling with us to bring us in across the finish line at Lands End, together with Pat, Janie, Paul and Euan if they can make it too!!??

Also our friends Amy and Laura aka Lily-Peds from Exeter will be coming down with their cycle rickshaw and do the last leg with us … with Jo riding high in the back so that she can be there and be part of crossing that finishing line with us herself!!

It’s not often that one event will give you a choice of charities but this one does … our rules are on the blog, they’re pretty simple and straightforward, so golooksee if you’re up for it. And whilst you’re at it, check out http://www.users.waitrose.com/~ianclare/links.htm .  All of the stories are very enlightening and on some occasions, very, very entertaining … somewhere in there, there will be information about the World’s first ‘Sail Thru’ Fish and Chip shop on the banks of the Clyde as well.

Anyone who is part of our launch of Bikeability and CTC's new 3 tier MTB training scheme will meet everyone on the day as the girls are bringing their rickshaw down from Exeter and Milly is bringing some of his 'crazy bikes' too!

Hopefully talk to you there … take care now and get training if you plan on joining us at any given stage, we’re always glad to have some company along!!  That’s why we need you to log onto the forum, so we can get an idea of interest and numbers etc. apart from those who already have established contact through previous training.
